Recognizing the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago

As Women’s History Month continues during Catholic Sisters Week, we are honored to recognize the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago and the extraordinary women who have carried their mission forward for generations.

Inspired by their foundress, Venerable Mother Theresa Dudzik, the Sisters have long responded to the needs of the most vulnerable with courage and compassion. They opened the first home for the aged in honor of St. Joseph — a bold and visionary effort that would become a model for what we now recognize as skilled nursing care. Their early leadership helped shape a ministry of healthcare that continues to serve countless individuals and families.

We recognize, especially, the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago’s Leadership Council: Sister M. Bernadette Bajuscik, OSF, Sister Jeanne Marie Toriskie, OSF, and Sister M. Helene Galuszka, OSF. The dedication of these three women ensures that the legacy of Mother Theresa Dudzik will continue to endure. We have been privileged to work with them, to advocate on their behalf, and, most importantly, to know them and be inspired by them. Sister Jeanne Marie’s work advancing the cause for Mother Theresa Dudzik’s beatification reflects a deep commitment to preserving and sharing the story of her foundress’s faith and resilience.

Through their lives of service, these Sisters embody the Franciscan spirit of humility, devotion, and care for others. We are grateful for their witness and honored to stand alongside them in support of their mission.
